How Often Should I Have a Professional Teeth Cleaning and Examination?

Ideally, we would love to see you in the office every six months. Studies have confirmed that people who maintain this schedule of dental cleanings and examinations tend to experience fewer instances of cavities, gum disease, and other dental concerns. At each visit, your dentist carefully examines the gums around every tooth, all surfaces of each tooth, and also your restorations like fillings and crowns. Your professional cleanings, when maintained every six months, may remain in the most conservative arena that includes the gentle removal of plaque and tartar, polishing using a special rotating or ultrasonic instrument, and flossing.

What’s the Difference Between Regular Teeth Cleaning, Deep Cleaning and Periodontal Maintenance?

Your dental cleanings are customized to your oral health needs. Regular cleanings are the preventative services that remove plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on certain teeth. During this service, your dentist or hygienist will also polish and floss your teeth. The goal of the regular cleaning is to prevent plaque and tartar, and the bacteria they harbor, from causing cavities and gum disease. Deep dental cleanings are corrective. So is periodontal maintenance. These services are necessary when you have some degree of infection affecting your gums. During a deep cleaning or periodontal maintenance visit, your dentist or hygienist may remove plaque and tartar from your teeth as well as from affected root surfaces. It may be necessary to smooth root surfaces that have been “dimpled” by bacterial invasion. It may also be necessary to apply medication to the treated area to reduce bacterial activity and allow the gums to naturally reattach to the teeth roots. Our team is diligent and careful in the performance of all dental services, including dental cleanings, to promote comfort and successful outcomes.

How Long Does a Teeth Whitening Procedure Take?

We offer convenient, affordable home teeth whitening treatment that utilizes powerful, professional-grade whitening agents. This method of teeth whitening is ideal for several reasons. First, you can engage in treatment daily in the comfort of your home. You might wear your whitening trays while you work, sleep, or watch television! Because you are not lifting multiple shades in one session, you may find the treatment process more comfortable, with less sensitivity or “zingers,” as they are called. When you whiten your teeth at home, you can expect to begin to see a difference in the shade of your teeth in the first week of your process. By the end of your second week, you can expect to be rewarded with a radiant, youthful smile!

Who is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Nearly any person who has experienced significant tooth loss may be a good candidate for dentures. This treatment has been around for over a century and has continued to improve over time, fortunately. Today, dentures look very much like natural teeth. They are fully customized to fit your oral anatomy, your facial anatomy, and also your lifestyle and preferences. Dr. Robert Bankhardt has a wealth of training and experience creating well-fitting partial, full, and fixed or removable dentures. During a consultation at our Simi Valley office, you can discover which type of denture would best suit your needs.

What Problems can Crowns Fix?

Dental crowns are a form of necessary restorative treatment. They are commonly included in root canal treatment as a restoration to fortify the tooth that has had its pulp removed due to infection. Additionally, crowns can be placed over teeth that have been cracked or chipped, or damaged in some way that makes them susceptible to further injury. The purpose of a crown is to cover the visible portion of the damaged tooth so it remains protected from bacteria and the unbuffered force of biting and chewing.  Finally, a crown may be recommended to address certain cosmetic concerns, such as severe discoloration or a misshapen tooth.

Is Gum Disease Affecting My Health?

Gum disease can have serious adverse effects on your health and wellness. Not only can this oral infection cause you to feel self-conscious about your breast or the appearance of your gums, but it can also affect other bodily organs. The primary concern that we have about untreated gum disease is its ability to cause tooth loss. Research also shows that chronic infection in the mouth may contribute to the development or progression of several health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, pregnancy complications, obesity, rectal cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. One of our primary objectives in patient care is to help people avoid the unnecessary toll of untreated gum disease. If you see the signs of oral infection, contact us to schedule a visit.
